Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is refusing to serve forclosure notices. This comes as a result of fraud that has been committed against law abiding, rent paying tennants. There have been too many instances of landlords taking mortages out for the units of their buildings and not using rent payments to pay for those mortages. As a result ontime rent paying tennants have been getting evictions.
For more details, Mark Brown wrote a coloumn laying out the history of the incident that sparked the decision.
I want to give Sheriff Dart kudos for having the courage to do this. Banks should do the investigative work to determine who is at fault for the defauted mortages. Landlords should let tennants know when their apartment has been mortaged. A law abiding tennant should not be punished for the sins of a greedy landlord.
Sheriff Dart. Well Done.
