Christmas Eve Sermon

Christmas Eve Poem

The wind dances with the breath of angels
Sweeping across the landscape
A tidal way of revelation
A breath of knowledge in the unknown

The cool air rolls down the hill
The flesh of the shepherds raises
A vestigial response
To the sudden change in the atmosphere

The cries of the sheep
Once echoing through the valley
Cease their refrain
Their sweet slumber covering the plain

The wind continues its terpsichorean spins
With the newly lit fire
Tendrils of orange and yellow
Reaching skyward they praise the giver of light

In the middle of this dance sit the shepherds
Their faces painted with dancing flames
Men with out a place –
Without means
Outcasts
Hired hands to care for the possessions of the 1%
Scoundrels and thieves
They are the laughed at and the feared

The flames dance
Reaching almost longing
Until with a flash they jump towards the heavens
The orange and yellow arms burst forth
Unrestrained they touch the heights

A voice cries out
Do not Fear – For unto you is born a baby
The one you have been waiting for
The one promised to your ancestors
Go to the city of Bread and see the baby
The baby born for you
The baby born for you
You will find him in a barn
Outcast
For there is no room in the inns
You will find him wrapped in rags
No clothes to call his own

This baby you will find is the one
The one who brings heaven to earth
Who brings hope to the disinherited
Born with his back against the wall

This baby you will find is the one
The one who brings heaven to earth
Who brings home to the displaced
Born with no place to call his own

This baby you will find is the one
The one who brings heaven to earth
Who brings peace to the mourning
Born in the blood soaked streets of occupation

This baby you will find is the one
the one who brings heaven to earth
Who brings freedom to the oppressed
Born longing for liberation

This baby you will find is the one who is the Great I AM
Come to earth
Immanuel
God with us

Then an army of angels join the chorus
And with voices like thunder they cry out
Glory, Glory to God in the highest
Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all

The armies of the Lord lay down their sword and shield
Beating them into plowshares
Planting the seeds of a new revolution
Of peace and love
Reconciliation and Repentance
Forgiveness and Grace

And the shepherds leave the 99 to find this One
The outcasts chosen to be the first
The thieves and scoundrels called to the head of the line
Hired hands given the keys to the kingdom

Who is this baby that they would be first
Who is this baby turning over the tables
Who is this baby sitting with thieves and prostitutes
Who is this baby whose newborn tears carry the weight of the world

This baby born in the city of bread
Becomes the bread of life
Whose cries pierced the darkness of a lonely animal stall
This night becomes the savior of the world

The shepherds see in that lonely animal stall
A child who chose them
As they were to be the first
Unconcerned for appropriate protocol
This child is love

***

Love enters into the world
Forever obliterating the chasm
Between heaven and earth
The veil torn

Love dances in the orange and yellow arms
Reaching up
Reaching out

Love entered into the heart of a mother
Who knew that when the spear pierced
The side of her son
The wound went deep into her own heart
And that in this there is no greater love
To gives ones life

That night in a lonely animal stall
Love was born
Love is born

Love is born for a blind man crying out at the Jericho wall
Love is born for a crippled man whose friends would do anything
Love is born for a widowed mother whose son had just died
Love is born for the addict struggling day by day
Love is born for the abused trying to be strong
Love is born for single parent wondering about the next meal

Love is born – breaks through rain of bullets blanketing our streets
Love is born – breaks through the racialized systems that seek to destroy imago Dei
Love is born – breaks through the walls of bigotry and injustice
knocking down the mighty from their perch
lifting the lowly, the forgotten, the outcast

Love is born – breaking through

Love is born for us
Where we are
Who we are
Love is born that we might be born anew

***

In that lonely animal stall
The shepherds see
They see it all
This night love is born
Love is born
In the cries of a baby
